Charity Knitting for the Pine/Strawberry Food Bank

Just a gentle reminder that on Thursday evenings between 4 and 7 PM we are having our charity knitting. We have quite a large number of items already....so please join us!!

Marti Heinert (who does all the purchasing for the Food Bank) came last Thursday and was elated by our efforts and the amount of items already knitted/crocheted. She indicated that we now have 79 families using the foodbank (up 9 families from a month ago) and that most of these families cannot affort to buy their children Christmas gifts this year, so these knitted items will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to all those who have already given of their time and to those who will join us in the weeks to come.

If you have extra yarn you won't be using please bring it along....we do have a number of large bins filled with yarn that you can also use.

Monday Knit Alongs

Our first Knit-Along Monday was a resounding success. The scarf that everyone chose was The Alpaca Yarn Companies "Knitted Interlace Scarf". We have a group of five women working together to create this project. Thanks to those who joined us for this first event of many to come.

Our next project starting on Monday November 15 will be the Gauntlets project. There already has been a lot of interest in this Knit-Along so please reserve your space now!

Knitting for Charity

Our first night of knitting for charity was a resounding success! We look forward to continuing and creating a new tradition here in Pine.

It was decided (by mutual agreement) that we would knit for the Pine Food Bank! It may sound like a strange charity to knit for but there are currently around 70 families in Pine utilizing the food bank and if they need food they will certainly need to be kept warm this winter.

So the first projects we started with are:

Scarves

No, It really is spring.

Did we worry about it's being too hot to knit? Hah! The snow continues in Pine....but promises to be gone and allow spring to proceed this week.

Carol sent in this great picture with her family wearing scarves she made. Looking wonderful.

And speaking of looking wonderful, remember: Maureen will have a Cabi show at the Yarn Shop on May 22nd. A chance to enhance your wardrobe!

Classes: Beginner classes start May 3, May 8, and June 5, 10:30 AM. Tell your friends and relations. Have them join the fun.
Get ready for the "Get it Together" class June 2nd at 10:30A. Do your knitting instructions say: "Assemble sweater" without any further hints? This is the class for you. Finish up those projects and come on in to get help with sewing them together.
Socks are back....the new sock class starts Monday, June 7 - using either double pointed or circular needles. And ...just in time ...new sock yarn.

For those shopping in the store, remember to fill out your shopping card for a discount after $200. Discount is always nice.

School budgets are under attack everywhere, including Shetland, England. The Times reports that budget cuts threaten the art of Shetland knitting and the Fair Isle sweater. The council (local government) is planning to offer retirement to its 14 knitting instructors, a move which could be a tragedy for Shetland culture.

New Yarn....new yarn....ahhh, new yarn. Amazing new colors from Noro: Kureyon, Taiyo, Iko, Furiside, Silk Garden. New pattern books for the new colors, too. I think Noro just wants to make dyslexic bloggers nuts with the names of their colors - but let's just say they are BEAUTIFUL!
And that's not all: New colors of Wisdom - Poems and Endurance. Rosetti cotton gold ( that's the very sparkly one), Suri Alpaca - oh, so soft, on the shelf next to the Universal Swiss Mohair. We're hoping for the mistake correcting class to come up soon, too. I think I have enough mistakes saved up. How about you? Remember, there'll be a "finishing garment" class in June - so if you're getting something together but not quite ready, this is the class for you.

Ok...I erred: the name of the knitting looms is Knifty Knitter not Knitty Knitter. I must say, Knifty Knitter makes more sense, because those looms are just nifty. One of our patrons said she used the rectangle loom to do an afghan before she learned to knit. So, though they are bright colors, these looms aren't just for kids. Catch some finished loom-knitted items at loomknitting.

Error 2: The name of one of the new Arucania yarns is Chaitén. I was close. and I did get the accent on the "e."

Moving on - Remember French knitters? I don't mean Chantal, although we miss her and will be happy when she is back. French knitters are the little wooden things with 4 "nails" in the top - used for making I-cords. Maureen has some very cute ones on the front display case. Great for distracting children. And for real I-cords. I used to make tremendously long cords for my great grandmother. I think she unravelled them to have something for me to do on my next visit. You can, actually, sew the cords into rugs, but I never saw any of those rugs at great grandma's.

April Bower Jewelry: Look for wide variety of April Bower's copper and silver jewelry in the front display. It is beautiful. If no one got you any of these pieces for Valentine's Day, I say, take matters into your own hands: Buy our favorite piece yourself, wrap it, and say "Oh, How Thoughtful." Open it. Look - your favorite!

An 87 year old knitter in Fort Wayne, Indiana, still teaches kntting, tatting and sewing. She syas she mainly does knitting now, "for charity." Ruth Malich says she enjoys teaching anybody. "It relaxes your brain, like music does." She said her daughter is a music teacher. When Ruth showed her both the European and American way to knit, her daughter said she liked the American way "because it goes 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 with the movement and the other way is only 1, 2." It's Sweet!

Sweet new bags...new yarns...new "toys" for knitters, it's a sweet time.

Maureen got in some amazing yarn made from sugar cane. It's from Arucania - called Ruca. Wow, it is soft! And beautiful colors. Maureen's going to have to discount one of the skeins after we all get done touching it (LOL). It's sweet! Also from Arucania, new books, a raw silk yarn called Chartén and Nature cotton.

New knitting "toys" include Knitty Knitting looms - both round and rectangular, as well as pattern books for the looms. New, too, pom pom makers (cheerleaders not included) - great for hats.
And...something we've been waiting for - labels: Handmade with love from mom, or nana, or grandma.

Addi Turbo needles: A few reports in - the needles are fast and wonderful. You may have seen the poster in the shop of the Addi Boy Group - 3 boys who are schoolmates from Sweden. In Sweden, boys must learn to knit. With the helpful hints from grandmother, the boys are knitting hats for fellow snowboarders and adding to their education funds. Two Swedish shops sell the boy's hand knit headwear exclusively. They knit with Addi Turbos - fast like the snowboarders.

Classes:
New classes start March 1st & 6th: Beginning knitting...get your friends addicted to what comedienne Tracy Ulmann calls the new yoga, knitting. I don't yet find as calming as yoga, but I'm getting there. (Yoga covers more muscle groups - I'm a witness.) Studies show knitting can relieve depression and stress. If you come knit with us on Wednesdays, there is no way you'll be depressed! Oh, back to classes: Lace workshop: 2 classes - March 3 & 10 - Hey- great time to use your new, very sharp, Addi Turbo needles.

Finished: Marilyn finished this cute sweater, left. Melba finished a coat sweater for her daughter - modeled by Temie. Sorry the pics aren't better - phone pics. Maybe the recipients will send new photos of the sweaters.

Who knows? Maureen may have to get labels saying knitted by grandpa. In Payson, Edwin Peace is quite a crocheter. He does amazing work, having learned as a boy during the long winters in Young. He often has pieces at the Payson senior center.

Sassy and Turbo

Sassy and Turbo...sounds like an ice dancing team, doesn't it? But REALLY it's new stuff at the Yarn Shop.
The Sassy Skein (sassyskein) bills itself as "the most unique children's designs in the knitting universe." Bad grammar not withstanding, these are very cute patterns and kits. I think I want to buy a kit just because the notions included are amazing. Be sure to read the company's story on their website, sassyskein.com .
These adorable ideas for kids are at the knit shop now.

Addi Turbo circular needles are finally in. No kinks. Sharp points. These are great. All over the web, praises are, well, praised, for these knitting needles.
Maureen also has a great story and poster about boys who knit. I'll have a copy of it for next time. Check out the poster at the store.

While you are in Pine at the knit shop, take a minute to check out the quilt store in the Settler's village. She has wonderful fabrics. Coming up at the Quilt store: rag rug weaving. Go in and sign up, when there are enough people, she'll start the class.

Deanna put together the syllabus for the Baby Clutch Ball. You may remember her making these last fall. They are cloth balls with Polyfil, assembled in curves, so baby can clutch, mash, chew, and drool on these things as much as she wants. You need some sewing experience with curved seams and setting corners. You will need access to a sewing machine. The info for the class is available at the yarn shop...or soon will be, along with a sign up sheet. I think Deanna is collecting info about who would be interested in the class before deciding a date.

It's the knitting olympics in Beacon Hill Villa care home, Vancouver, British Columbia. A volunteer brought in the yarn last week, and six blankets are done and on their way to Haiti with other relief materials. They've decided to keep knitting blankets - more for orphanages in Haiti - and other locations. (Story & photo courtesy Times/Colonist)

Ahhhhh. It's so nice to have the yarn shop open again. And full of surprises!
Have you seen all the Knit Happy bags and accessories? They are really cute. Project bags, purses (or more knitting stuff) bags, mugs. Something for your favorite knitter - or YOU - for Valentine's day.
Maureen also has the beautiful April Bower jewelry. You must know someone who needs to get these things for you!
New needles are coming in, and there are new pattern books. It's just great to be home.

Maureen has yarn for each of us to make a hat for Time Out shelter. These are seconds from LeLana, which they've given specifically for knitting for a cause.

New classes: I know we have some new ones coming up...and I promise to post them as soon as I get a new schedule.

Ok: this is about crocheting, and you've probably seen it, but I like it:
  A man & a woman had been married for 60 years. They had shared everything, talked about everything. Except-the little old woman had kept a shoebox in the top of the closet that he was never to ask about or open.
  For all those years, he forgot about the box, until the woman became very ill, and the doctor said she would not recover. In sorting out their affairs, he took the box to his wife's bedside. She agreed it was time he knew what was in the box. When he opened the box he found 2 crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.
   He asked about the contents. She explained: When we were to be married, my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was never to argue, just crochet a doll.
   The man was so happy. In all those years of marriage - just two dolls in the box! She had been angry only two times in their marriage!
   "Honey," he said, "that explains the dolls, but what about the money? Where did that come from?" "Oh," she replied, "I got that from selling the dolls." Smile.

Here's Ethel! Now that coat is just beautiful with her coloring... and the rhinestone and black buttons really set it off. According to Margie, the coat is a little big, but Ethel won't take it off.

Now here's a doggie of another kind. The model is great! I bet Judy had a time getting him to be still enough for a picture. Judy made all the animal hats, so if you think your kids or grands need one, she's the person to ask.

Classes: Remember, new classes start next week. I think the sweater class is going to work on a hoodie. Be sure to check the schedule at the shop.

Some of you have already knit some great bags. Give this one from the 1940's a try. Free Vintage Patterns has all the info you need. Maybe. It could be smashing!

Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was spectacular. Hope you have lots of knitting time over the next few weeks.

If you haven't been by, you missed Margie's display of the hat (left) and the doggie sweater (right). Plus, great news, Barb's been on vacation and able to visit the shop twice in one week.

Of course, with our recent snow we are highly motivated to sit inside and knit...especially staying nice and cozy at our favorite knit shop.

Maureen, Lora, and others are off to Long Beach at the beginning of January. They'll bring us plenty of new ideas from the National Needle Arts conference.

Well, for some reason, Blogger thought we were spam for a bit, so we couldn't get on to the site. All resolved...& we're back.

Just in time to show off two great pieces. On the left is the amazing beaded scarf Chantal is working on. She went to a class... which let's you know how complicated this is because Chantal can knit anything! She and Lora are going to do a class next summer, so practice, practice, practice. Judy finished her last animal hat and it is, as you can see, adorable. Can't wait to see it on the recipient.

Shopping: Remember the 20% off yarns sale ends Wednesday, Nov. 25th. And, if you didn't get everything knitted, there are still many finished items for sale. Some knitters in you're life aren't lucky enough to live here. Send them something from our yarn shop.

Maureen has a showcase of April Bower jewelry. If you don't know about April, she is a local jewelry maker. Her copper and silver jewelry is beautiful.

Native knitters

A note before we get to these cute babies... Temie's event is Dec. 6 at 2PM. I said 3PM before...oops. 2PM.

Cute babies. Baby Bella is Lorna's new granddaughter... a new blanket by Maureen. Little Gwynnie - tiny family friend, is wearing red mittens by Maureen. Definitely worth the trip to England.

And speaking of worth the trip... we missed some of you on Monday. But welcome home, Temie. Hoping for good news from you and Lora. It's worth the trip to the store...all kinds of beautiful new yarns. I saw Melba leaving with some, and Margie. Plus sale yarns make it easy to get enough for two or three sweaters. The sock yarns are lovely, too. Catch up with Margie and see the socks she is doing. And congratulations to Diane on 2 pairs of socks done.
Native knitters from the Cowichan villages in British Columbia won rights to prevent Hudson's Bay Company from selling knockoffs of their Olympic sweater design. The tribes will now be able to sell their original products at the Olympic Village and the Hudson's Bay store in Vancouver. The controversy has boosted special orders for for many Cowichan knitters.

See, knitters...now maybe we can knit-bomb the community center to generate publicity and special orders. I guess I have to be able to knit more than a scarf, though.

Just in ... Judy's grand children in the hats. Look back a few posts to see husbands in the frog hat. These models are, somehow, more appealing.

Time to get out and knit something warm - snow is predicted. Great time to work with some of those more bulky (and hot) yarns. Maureen has new items on the shelves, new magazines and books are in. The lovely item pictured from 1928, is not, however, among the patterns.

The alpaca I'm using now is really great this time of year. It was too hot a few weeks ago.

Class news: Lora did well with her surgery and will still advise us in classes coming up. She misses Chantal's hands. Hey she misses her own hands. But Margie and others have lent theirs, so the classes go on.
Coming Up: Knit Socks starts Monday, Nov. 9 at 10:30 AM. Fair Isle Hat starts Wednesday, November 4 at 10:30 AM (Maybe...check at the shop). Basic Scarf - on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10:30 AM. Call the shop to check on the classes, especially the basic classes, as Lora's arm in a sling may not be conducive to a beginning class. I think there's another lace class coming, too.

As the leaves leave us, it's time to think of something fun.
Dee brought in some trips, hoping to have a knit cruise. I think the most recent vote was Feb. 8-12, for a 4-night, Mexican cruise leaving from Long Beach. Check with Dee at one of the knit-togethers on Wednesday afternoon. She's putting together a sign-up sheet.
Also in the works is a KnItaly trip. No real details yet, except a villa in Rome or Florence from which we venture forth to see Italy. Maureen is organizing this one, so watch for more info.
Closer to home, be sure to mark Temie's party on your calendar. Dec. 6th at 3PM. (We miss you this week, Temie.) We hope Chantal and Sherry brave the north's chill and come up for the soiree.

No one has "knit-bombed" Pine or Strawberry. I've seen no "sign cozies" around the Community Center. So, more incentive... Another fun idea from the Brits- uh - Scots, actually.
They knitted a bridge-long scarf as part of the Scotland Homecoming celebration. This is along the Skye bridge. BBC reports that members of the National Health Service, Highland, learned to knit on their lunch hour in order to participate. The article reports that this was also seen as a way to stay healthy, as research shows knitting reduces stress (really!) and reduces risk of memory loss. Maureen said knit shops were few, but knitting is catching on again, in England. Let's gather more knitters to our cozy place!

We're back!

Be not afraid..it's just Temie's hat... or should we say Simone's hat. Amazingly, many of us from the knit shop were gone at the same time. It was great to see most everyone back. And see the projects folks got done while on the road.

Temie got the lovely hat, and really cute vest done...with some help from the friends.

Melba finished her sweater, and is off on another sweater and sock adventure. She also demonstrated Simone's hat, but we'll save that for another time.

Judy finished 3 hats, and promised to email me the pictures. When I get them, you'll see them - on the grandchildren. A double treat.

Terry, a new knit groupie, amazing knitter, did these lace socks.

Dani finished a scarf. This was fun. Cast on 203 stitches, knit 33 rows - done. Oh, the other picture of the scarf...that comes with Melba and the hat.

We're looking forward to Lora's return - after surgery on that arm. She's been helping us one handed! Thank you Chantal and other master knitters for pitching in.

Remember the potluck tomorrow, Wednesday, evening at the shop. It's like we never leave. We're going to have to ask Maureen to put in some sleeper sofas!

Knitting one-handed

I've heard from some of the knitters that Lora broke her arm. She is, however, still helping us novices. She and Chantal are able to overcome!

Just a brief note...if you are looking for something unique for a gift, and feel like YOU are knitting one-handed, check the finished items. I don't have a picture, but Chantal did some great fingerless gloves.

Meanwhile, I think we're slacking. I haven't heard of a single knit bomb in Pine or Strawberry. And, just to show us up, the BBc reports that a giant patchwork poem of Dylan Thomas has been created in central London, with contributions of over 1000 knitters. Each knitter did a 12 inch square letter of the poem. Let's see...what can we write in 20 letters? (Photo - BBC)

Looks like Lora may have been allergic to the camera flash. Maureen has a great smile. It was a great gathering. Makes me look forward to Temie's winter soiree.

Gaining skills...we hope

New classes have bought us some new knitters for Monday and Wednesday afternoon open knit. Monday afternoon's schedule is for beginning knitters, but we all come in, and, if we're not too rowdy and the beginning class is small, we're able to hang out and knit.

Vliet, who is a master of crochet, began knitting less than a year ago...this is her latest creation. There's hope for us all.

Today's lace scarf class went really well, according to Lora. She said she's going to extend it a bit, so people have time to practice more with the new stitches. I forgot about it, so I'm making a list for you (& me) so you don't miss out.

Classes coming up:
Two beginning knitting classes start in October: Saturday, Oct. 3, 10:30 AM and Monday, Oct. 5, 2 PM. Tell your friends!

Learn to knit socks: Begins Monday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 AM. All the folks in the September class have actual socks, at least one, done. And it was easy! Well, easier.

Christmas Stocking: Begins Wednesday, October 14 at 10:30 AM. Christmas...it's happening again this year!

Mitten workshop: Two classes, the first is Thursday, Oct. 15, 10:30 AM.

And...in the sweater department... this is "knitteen" and her creation. She's a teen!?! ummm... Sandy said she was ready to move on from hats and scarves ... she's going to do the next sweater class. Lora's not sure when that will be. Not this sweater, ok?

FALL... Brings out the fiber artist in all of us. Let's face it, sometimes it's hard to get in the mood to make a sweater when it's 90º outside.

The cool front arrived this morning in our villages. Definitely motivation to see what's happening at the shop.

Maureen has some great artwork up. The button selection for those sweaters and what-not is waiting for your finished items.

At the shop yesterday, Judy showed her finished duckie hat. No pictures yet. I think she's off to see the lucky recipient, aka grandchild, next week. We'll get pictures then.

According to the British Mail, the sale of knitting needles has risen 11% with in the last year. the latest fashion trend is a long, chunky scarf wrapped around several times. And, hope for those of us who pull out our projects several times..."Studies have shown that the repetitive action of knitting can help LOWER stress levels."

Gatherings, new classes, and socks

Here are some of the pics from Vliet's gathering. The husbands actually enjoyed themselves, t00. I'm not sure why Vliet and Sandy look so...umm...something. Mugging, I expect. It was a beautiful day in Strawberry, and the views Les & Vliet have from their home are magnificent.

New classes have started. Hang in there beginning knitters. What am I saying? Hang in there sock class. I understand this sock class is a little easier with bigger yarn and circular needles. Remember the days when

Speaking of socks....baby socks, well, booties. They are beautiful, Temie. And the ribbon just sets them off, Judy.

Maureen has brought in several kits and wools from LaLana hand spun wools from New Mexico. These are vegetable dyed wools and their own variety of millspun yarns. I've added their website to the blog favorites, so you can read their story. These yarns work up beautifully.

GIFTS: Some of you have seen the patterns Lora has knitted for the store. Maureen has a new display rack in the center room for these. She has the pattern and cost for the yarn on each piece, or you can purchase the finished product. Gift giving time is fast approaching!

Some of you were asking about the sweater I made for my mom (with Lora's help). Here it is, displayed by mom. She likes it. It fits! And her friends like it, too. Sweet!

CAbi - Sorry I couldn't go, but I hear it was a great success. Melba has offered her home for the spring show. This was "Luncheon and a Fashion show" event for Pine & Strawberry, as a number of people had lunch together at Randall House before going over to the Yarn Shop. Almost makes us sound like...Scottsdale. But much more friendly.

Remember: New beginning knitting class starts at 2PM on Monday, 9/14. And if you haven't been in lately, Maureen has made some changes in displays and such. She has some gorgeous art up from a local artist for sale. There are new yarns in, vintage and wooden buttons, and new needle sizes.

I have some photos of the get-together at Vliet's for the next post. Oh, and Temie wants to mark Dec. 6 on your calendars for the gathering at her house.

New Project: Everyone ready? We're going to knit an iPhone™. Just kidding. But someone did it.

But really, take a look at the schedule. There's a new sweater class coming up, and a lace shawl/scarf class. The patterns look beautiful.

Be sure to look at the new yarns. They are quite reasonably priced, and feel wonderful. New baby yarns just came in. Maureen also now has several sizes of 16" (short wire) circular needles.

Latest Outing:

A number of the KnitChicks2 (working title) went to lunch, and to see Julie and Julia. The chatting at lunch was great. Melba even brought some knitting books from the library to make it an official knitting event. The movie was wonderful. If you haven't seen it, you must!

Next Thursday, a gaggle of KnitChicks2 is planning a journey to Prescott for lunch and shopping. Thanks to Dee, we all have each other's phone numbers. If you didn't get a list, check at the shop. If you want to go Thursday, stop by Wednesday for Open Knitting, and get all the details.

Remember the Crafts Fair and Pancake Breakfast this weekend, as well as the library book sale. And keep Saturday the 12th in mind for Maureen's trunk show. Some of the fashions look like they'd travel well, so save some of your "allowance" for this event, especially those of you with upcoming vacations.

Sunday, some of our favorite people who live in Portal 4 have invited us up for their fundraiser/silent auction and great food to benefit the foodbank. Check with Judy and Temie if you need more information. The event starts at 4PM.

Hurrah! The sock class knitting in the round is underway. It's on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 instead of Monday mornings, though. Still time to come and get the hang of it. But Lora promises a Monday sock class later in the fall. We gave a round of applause for Gwen, as she turned her sock successfully! Thanks to Melba and her iPhone, the event was suitably commemorated.

Of, course, then Melba went wild and we'll have some other pictures from her famous iPhone here.

CHANGES!

Speaking of changes, Maureen lowered prices on some of the Southwest yarns. And she received a new shipment of knitting gadgets today. She got those magnet boards, Margie. These are the ones you can slide your pattern on and use the highlighted attached ruler to mark where you are.

TRAVEL

Thank goodness for Melba and her camera. Because she's so good, we have record of some of the husband's trying on the "Frog Hat" Judy made for her grandchild. Of course, we'll post the grandchild picture when we get it. Which reminds me, Temie, we need one of your granddaughter in her latest knitted outfit!

New sweaters, new classes, potluck

Remember that scrumptious green sweater Lora was making for her granddaughter? Here it is, with the lovely model herself. Now, for all of us struggling along on our sweaters, here's hope that, with Lora's guidance, they will turn out as well.

New Classes for August

Saturday, August 1st, Beginning Knitting starts at 10:30A. If Saturday's don't work for you, come to class on Monday, August 3. Beginning Knitting begins at 2P. The beginner (or refresher) class is a scarf class and lasts four weeks. Tell your friends what fun they are missing at open knitting on Wednesday afternoons, and get them into that beginning class. Remember to purchase your materials before class, and bring a check for Lora for the class.

Yes, it's hot now. Who's thinking of sweaters? We are! Lora is starting a new Sweater class on Monday, August 10th at 10:30A. The pattern for this class is a sweater coat. Some of you might remember the one Lora did for Maureen. That's the style you'll make in this class. Sweater class is eight sessions, so it should be cooling off nicely in the evenings by the time you finish your project.

Socks. They're baaack. Join Lora at 10:30A on Wednesday, August 5, for the new Sock class. This time it's a sport weight sock knitted in the round. Classes meet for 4 weeks. It's a beginning sock class, so, no, we are not going to knit both socks at the same time. That's just crazy! Check with Maureen or Lora about the materials.

Potluck

Remember to sign up for Vliet's potluck. Thanks for hosting the get-together Vliet. 3P, Sunday, August 9, at her home in Strawberry. The sign up sheet is in the knitting room.

A quick note to let everyone know about the great buttons Maureen got in. The buttons are hand-made in third-world countries by women. These are beautifully carved and shaped. The Yarn Shop received a shipment of new books, too. Melba and I have looked through them, and have found some wonderful apparel we'll enjoy watching Laura, Paula, Margie, and Temie knit.

Maureen has some events coming up for everyone.

This weekend in Pine and Strawberry is a BIG one: Strawberry Festival at the community center in Pine, Quilt show at the community center in Pine, Blues festival at the meadow in Strawberry, AND the Shop Hop on Saturday in Pine. If you don't know about the Shop Hop - all the stores stay open late, serve wonderful refreshments and it's a good time to see what's going on in Pine. Come and Shop Hop this Saturday.

On July 11th, Maureen will have a Silpada Jewelry show at the shop. Beautiful Sterling Silver jewelry exclusively designed for and by Silpada Designs. Each design is unique. Silpada employs artisans from around the world. Come to the party, Saturday, July 11th.

Remember the Knit in Public day this Sunday, June 14. If you plan to go, and want to carpool, be sure to check with Maureen. Several people are driving up on Sunday for lunch, and knitting!

The first shopping outing for the Wednesday knitters was a great success. We couldn't leave Prescott without a visit to the yarn shop there. Happenings

We missed some of you at the Wednesday get-together. But welcome to some new knitters, and some old friends, whom we haven't seen in a few weeks.

Remember, some of us are planning to go to the World Wide Knit in Public Day at La Posada on June 14.

Diane suggested that some may want to go up the night before, and make a real girls weekend. We're for that!

Let Melba know, and she'll set up the reservations - or talk to Lora or Maureen at the shop.

Be sure to get on the list, one way or another, if you'd like to carpool up to Winslow.

The first weekend of June, 6-& 7, is theWool Festival in Flagstaff, hosted by the

Arizona Historical Society Pioneer Museum, 2340 N. Fort Valley Rd. Events include sheep shearing, livestock and fleece judging, wool spinning, and traditional crafts. This is the weekend before the trip to La Posada. Maybe we need another carpool? Check at the Pine Yarn Shop to see who is planning to drive up.

Historical Society Pioneer Museum has ongoing demonstrations of traditional arts including weaving, spinning, candle dipping. Exhibitions at the festival include sheep shearing, pioneer cooking, and the fiber arts.

"I worked, I knitted." Maria D'Antuono, 98, was trapped for 30 hours in her home in L'Aquila, Italy after an earthquake in April. Her knitting kept her calm. Well, some news agencies report she crocheted... whichever - the needles were going.

Some of us would like our knitting to keep us calm. We aren't in Sig.ra D'Antuono's league. But we hope we soon will be.

She also wanted a comb before she faced the media and throngs of onlookers. I hope to be as graceful as this lovely 98 year-old lady in those years... or now!

Remember, no Thursday evening knitting on the 14th & 28th.

New, new, new! New yarns, new classes, new things to do at the Pine Yarn Shop.

This Saturday is the kick-off for the Pine Shop Hop.

Enjoy a beautiful spring evening, Saturday, May 9th, walking through Pine. All your favorite shops will be open, including, of course, the Pine Yarn Shop. This will be a perfect time to see all the new yarns, or just stop in and visit with Maureen.

New Yarns: I don't mean stories, of course, but we have a few of those, too, from our Wednesday open knitting time. But first - new to the shop this week: Araucania yarns - Nature Cotton, Patagonia, Aysen, and Chacabuco, as well as their absolutely scrumptious sock yarns. New colors are in for Universal Cotton Supreme. We also have Trendsetters and Cascade. Look through the luscious Treasure Trails from Rowena.

Maureen got in some great new books and magazines, even some on knitting for your pet! Some of the books were snatched up by the Wednesday knitting group, practically before Maureen or Lora could get a price on them!

EVENTS and CLASSES:

The "Sock Knitting" class starts this Wednesday, May 13, at 10:30AM. If you haven't registered, or picked out your supplies, come in before 10:30 on Wednesday - there's still time.

The "Beginning Knitting" class is on Mondays at 10:30AM. The first class was last week, but you could still join this week, and Lora will catch you up.

Look for new classes in June, including the infamous "Sweater" class.

World Wide Knit in Public Day: Join all your friends for this special event, June 14th. Our Wednesday group is joining other knitters for a day at La Posada in Winslow. Stop in and sign up with Maureen. We're planning a carpool to Winslow. This is the same weekend as the Strawberry Festival, so check out all the shops, crafts, and Strawberry Festival events on June 13th and come knit with us at La Posada on June 14th.

Thursday Nite Knits: Bring your stockpile of yarn, and come knit scarves and hats for Marcie's Kids, a Payson non-profit. It's an open group, crochet welcome, too. Thursday evenings 5-7.

We may also make things for families in Time Out shelter.

You've seen it mentioned SEVERAL times, open knitting on Wednesdays. Join a wild group of knitters, of all levels, each Wednesday afternoon from 1-4. We're in the back room trading "yarns," and even getting some knitting done, too.
